DCH, 2001. This movie brings memories of all things bright and beautiful. I had just returned home after a good performance at the 2nd sim-cat, and I sat down to watch it on the local cable channel soon after I walked in. I was undergoing a self-imposed ban on watching movies in the theatre, and this was a welcome break. It was monsoon time in Mumbai. All in all, life was good.
I adore this movie. In Aamir’s words, “Perfection ko improve karna mushkil hai!”
Ahem. This is a rather soppy start.
Why don’t you watch these clips first, and then I’ll get down to telling you what I really want to say?
This is a movie I enjoyed watching again for the generous usage of humour, and the taut storyline. Aamir Khan played Akash Malhotra, Preity Zinta played Shalini, Saif Ali Khan played Sameer, Sonali Kulkarni played Pooja, Akshaye Khanna played Siddharth Sinha, and Dimple Kapadia played Tara Jaiswal.
To me, Saif and Dimple were perfectly cast in their roles. I just cannot imagine anybody else play Sameer the way Saif did. He brought the right mix of confusion, impulse, and friendliness that his character demanded. As for Dimple, she lent dignity and maturity to her character.
I liked Akshaye’s Siddharth then, and do so even today (I watched the movie last weekend). What I do wish is that Aamir should have played this sensitive character. Watch the two actors shed tears in the movie, and you would know what I mean – Aamir, when he is going through a romantic upheaval; Akshaye, when the woman he loves dies in the hospital.
It looks like Farhan Akthar would agree with me. After all, he had Akshaye Khanna in mind as Akash, Hrithik Roshan as Siddharth (a role he couldn’t do), and Saif Ali Khan as Sameer (he almost turned the film down). When Aamir was signed for the movie, he wanted to play Akash and that’s how Akshaye became Siddharth.
Sonali, notwithstanding her good performance, did not make a good screen partner to Saif. Preity would have done this role better – that of a thinking girl who is ready to explore options, make her mistakes and move on.
To me, the weakest character is Shalini. She is content to be protected by the male in her life, whether Rohit or Akash, and is hesitant to speak her mind. I couldn’t reconcile to the fact that feisty Preity was playing her. She looks fresh and lovely, and perhaps that’s why Farhan cast her in this role.
Who should have played Aamir’s cad character? Ranbir Kapoor; I am saying this on basis of his performance in this movie. Alas, he was too young then.
Which character did you like the most?
