“Dasvidaniya!” (2008)

‘Dasvidaniya’ means ‘Goodbye’ in Russian. The movie stars Vinay Pathak who plays the protagonist Amar Kaul. He leads a largely humdrum existence, and is fond of making to-do lists to carry him through the day. He gets diagnosed with stomach cancer, and is given 3 months to live.

“Jo aadmi apne mein jeeta hai, woh apne aap se baat karta hai” is said during his conversation with his inner self, and he sets out to making a list of things to do before he dies. The rest of the movie is about how he goes about the tasks mentioned in his list.

Watching the versatile ex-Channel [V] VJs Vinay and Ranvir Shorey (in a bit role) is always entertaining, but to me the performance of the movie is that of Sarita Joshi who plays Vinay’s mother. Her character cannot hear properly, is driven to tears as she fumbles with the TV remote, and keeps watching serials made by her (estranged) younger son. Watch out for her expressions – the glee as she praises Amar for the car and the confusion when she cannot hear the first ‘live’ performance by him - for there are no batteries in her hearing aid.

Scenes of the movie, in order of my preference
  • Amar breaking down, after getting beaten by prostitutes
  • Amar expressing his love for his childhood and now-married friend via dumb charades
  • Amar’s inner self telling him,“Duniya usi ki dabata hai jo dabta hai”
There are two songs in the movie, and I was happy to hear Sonu Nigam after a long time. Watch the movie to know more about the Russian connection.

My takeaway: Do what you want to. NOW. Never mind the constantly ticking clock.
